Running tours for people who want to see more of York
Run The City was created for people who like the idea of exploring somewhere properly, not just passing through it.
York is a city made for slowing down, looking up and taking in the details. Its walls, snickelways, riverside paths, medieval streets and centuries of stories all sit close together, which makes it perfect for exploring on foot. But instead of walking from place to place, Run The City adds a little movement, energy and fresh air to the experience.
This is not a race. It is not a training session. It is not about pace, PBs or proving how fit you are.
It is a relaxed running tour of York, designed for everyday runners who want to discover more of the city while enjoying an easy, social run.
When you run through a city, you notice things differently. You cover more ground than you would on a standard walking tour, but you are still close enough to the streets, buildings and people to feel properly connected to where you are. You can move from riverside paths to historic gateways, from quiet corners to famous landmarks, all in a way that feels active, relaxed and memorable.
I also wanted to create something that made running feel welcoming.
So many running experiences can feel intimidating from the outside. They can sound like they are only for fast runners, serious athletes or people who already know exactly what they are doing. Run The City is different. It is built around an easy, conversational pace, regular stops and a friendly atmosphere, so you can enjoy the run without worrying about being left behind.
The aim is simple: to help you see more of York, learn more about its history and finish feeling like you have done something genuinely enjoyable with your day.
I’m Sam and I’ll be your host. I have run multiple marathons and ultramarathons over the years, and I have learnt plenty from the good days, the tough days and the dreaded DNF’s. Those experiences have given me a lot of respect for running in all its forms, but the kind of running I enjoy most is still easy running.
The sort where you can chat. The sort where you notice where you are. The sort where the pace matters far less than the people, the route and the feeling of getting outside.
That love of easy, social running is what sits at the heart of Run The City.
York has always been a special place to me too. Both of my parents and all four of my grandparents are York natives, and I grew up less than an hour away from the city. I have spent a lot of time here over the years, returning again and again to its streets, walls, riverside paths, pubs, shops, landmarks and hidden corners.
I want every tour to feel welcoming, interesting and enjoyable. Whether you are visiting for the first time, coming back to a city you already love, or looking for a different kind of running experience, Run The City is here to help you explore York at a pace that lets you enjoy it.
