What Fitness Level Do You Need for a Running Tour?
If you like the idea of a running tour but feel a little unsure about whether you are “fit enough”, you are not alone.
For many people, the phrase running tour sounds more intense than it actually is. It can make you picture a fast group, a strict pace and the worry of being left behind. But that is not what Run The City is about.
Our York running tour is designed to be relaxed, social and accessible for everyday runners. It is not a race. It is not a training session. It is not about chasing a PB.
It is an easy running tour through York, with regular stops, a conversational pace and plenty of time to enjoy the city along the way.
Do you need to be a serious runner?
No, you do not need to be a serious runner to join a running tour.
Run The City is aimed at people who enjoy running, or who are happy jogging at an easy pace, but do not necessarily think of themselves as “proper runners”. You might run once or twice a week, you might do the occasional parkrun, or you might simply enjoy getting out for a gentle jog when you can.
You do not need to be fast. You do not need to have run races. You do not need to own all the latest kit.
The tour is built around easy, social running. The kind of running where you can chat, look around and enjoy where you are.
If you are looking for a beginner friendly running tour in York, this is designed to feel welcoming rather than intimidating.
What pace do we run at?
Run The City is run at a relaxed, conversational pace of around 6:00 to 6:30 minutes per kilometre, which is roughly 9:40 to 10:20 minutes per mile.
That pace is quick enough to feel like a run, but steady enough that most everyday runners can enjoy it comfortably. The aim is not to push you hard. The aim is to move through York at a pace that lets you take in the streets, landmarks and stories without feeling rushed.
There will be no sprinting, no pressure to keep up with a fast group and no awkward feeling that you are holding anyone back.
The pace is part of what makes this a relaxed running tour. We keep it easy so the experience stays enjoyable.
How far do you run at one time?
One of the most important things to know is that the tour is not one continuous run from start to finish.
There are regular stops throughout the route, giving you chance to catch your breath, hear about York’s history and enjoy the surroundings. At no point in the tour do we run for longer than around 2KM, or 1.2 miles, in one go.
That makes the experience much more manageable than some people expect. You get the benefit of an active tour and the enjoyment of running through the city, but with natural breaks built in.
This stop-start format is ideal if you are comfortable running but do not want to commit to a long continuous effort. It also means the tour feels more like a social activity than a workout.
Can I join if I run 5K?
Yes. As a simple guide, if you can comfortably run 5K in around 45 minutes, you should fit right in.
That does not mean you need to be able to race a 5K or run one at maximum effort. It simply gives a useful benchmark for the level of fitness needed. If you can comfortably cover 5K at an easy pace, the tour should feel very achievable.
Because the running is broken up with stops, the experience is often less demanding than a standard continuous 5K run. You will move, pause, listen, look around and then run again.
If you already enjoy an occasional 5K, parkrun, treadmill run or social jog, you are likely to be well suited to the tour.
What if I am nervous about being too slow?
It is completely normal to feel nervous before joining a running group, especially if you do not know who else will be there.
A lot of runners worry about being too slow. They worry everyone else will be faster, fitter or more experienced. Run The City has been designed with that feeling in mind.
This is not a competitive running group. Nobody is there to judge your pace. The tour is led at an easy speed, with regular regrouping and stops along the way.
The focus is on the experience of exploring York, not on performance.
If you are someone who enjoys running but tends to avoid faster groups, clubs or training sessions, a guided running tour can be a much more comfortable way to run with others.
Is it suitable for beginners?
Run The City is suitable for everyday runners rather than complete beginners who have never run before.
You do not need to be highly experienced, but you should be able to jog steadily and feel comfortable covering short running sections. If you are currently building up from walk-run sessions, you may want to wait until you can run continuously for a little longer before booking.
However, if you can already manage a steady 5K, even at a relaxed pace, then this beginner friendly running tour should feel very approachable.
The key thing is that you can run gently, listen, stop, restart and enjoy the route without feeling under pressure.
What should you wear?
You do not need specialist running kit for the tour, but you should wear clothes and shoes that you are comfortable running in.
A pair of running trainers is recommended, especially as York has a mix of pavements, paths, cobbled areas and uneven surfaces. Comfortable layers are also a good idea, as the weather can change and the stops may feel cooler than the running sections.
You do not need to look like an elite athlete. Just wear what you would normally wear for an easy run.
Why an easy pace makes the tour better
The relaxed pace is not just about making the tour accessible. It actually makes the experience better.
York is a city full of details. Its streets, walls, buildings and hidden corners are worth noticing. If you run too quickly, you miss too much.
By keeping the pace easy, you have time to look up, listen and enjoy the route. You can chat with other people, ask questions and feel connected to the city rather than rushing through it.
That is the real value of an easy running tour. You still get the energy and enjoyment of running, but you also get the depth of a guided experience.
